Today Scotland welcomes Bill Gates and representatives of the The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to share work being carried out by NHS Scotland staff as part of Scotland’s commitment to global health. Mr Gates will meet with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood in Edinburgh to hear first-hand about a number of global health initiatives, including the work undertaken by the Aberdeen-Bahir Dar Knowledge Exchange Partnership.
Over the last four years, The Soapbox Collaborative and NHS Grampian (NHSG) have worked with Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital (FHRH) and Bahir Dar University towards improving quality care and infection prevention and control. Alongside the First Minister and Chief Medical Officer, NHSG’s Director of Acute Services Gary Mortimer has been invited to Edinburgh to meet Mr Gates to discuss the work he and his team carried out when they visited FHRH to share skills and train maintenance staff. The visit resulted in significant improvements to the availability of running water, and increased handwashing facilities in the maternity unit.
The meeting is a fantastic opportunity to share the successes of our partnership with important stakeholders, and to hear from others working to promote global citizenship.
