Today marks the beginning of World Antibiotic Awareness Week! The week aims to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policymakers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.
At Soapbox, we believe preventing infections from occurring in the first instance will negate antibiotic use and help prevent the spread of AMR. Infection is extremely dangerous around the time of birth as it accounts for 10-15% of maternal and newborn deaths. AMR could increase these deaths even more if infections are rendered untreatable by antibiotics.
Effective cleaning in health facilities can ensure patients and health workers are protected in the very place the should feel the safest. Simple solutions such as good hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of infections. Everyone can contribute to reducing the threat of AMR by sharing the messages of world antibiotic awareness week.
