Last month we were delighted to announce our newly funded CLEAN study which will investigate whether training and supervision of ‘cleaning champions’ and subsequent training and supervision of hospital cleaning staff, improves environmental hygiene in three maternity and newborn units in Tanzania.

Tomorrow will see the first meeting of the project team which brings together researchers and clinicians from a variety of fields including quality improvement, microbiology and maternal health. This is the exciting first step in the project where the team will meet face-to-face for the first time to start discussing in depth the study details, timeline and responsibilities.

The study, the first of its kind focusing on environmental hygiene and cleaning staff, is part of the Joint Global Health Trial development grant funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), and the Wellcome Trust.
